How to maintain artificial turf
Minutes a month, not hours a week. The routine that keeps turf full, clean and under warranty.
Updated · By The Turf Factory
The short answer
Brush high-traffic areas to keep blades upright, rinse every few weeks (more often in pet areas), clean spills right away with mild soap and water, and clear leaves and debris so water keeps draining.
The basic routine
Turf care comes down to four habits:
- Brush. Cross-brush high-traffic areas with a stiff-bristle broom or power brush to keep blades upright and limit matting.
- Rinse. Hose the turf down every few weeks to clear dust and pollen. Rinse pet areas more often.
- Clear debris. Use a leaf blower or rake to remove leaves, twigs and debris so the backing keeps draining.
- Top up infill. Check infill in busy areas and add more if the blades start to lie flat.
Following the care steps your installer gives you also keeps your warranty valid.
Pet areas
Rinse pet areas regularly and pick up solid waste as you would on grass. For odor, use a turf deodorizer or an enzyme cleaner made for synthetic turf. Flow-series turf, like Premier Pet Flow 55, drains over 400 inches per hour, so rinse water and urine move straight through the backing.
Spills and stains
Clean spills as soon as they happen with mild soap and warm water, then rinse. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals, which can damage the fibers and backing.
Weeds
A weed barrier installed under the base is the best prevention. If a weed appears along an edge or seam, pull it or spot-treat it.
Care by season
- Spring: a full brush-through and a light rinse to refresh the lawn after winter.
- Summer: a quick rinse cools the surface on hot afternoons before kids and pets play.
- Fall: clear fallen leaves often so they don’t block drainage.
- Winter: where it snows, keep heavy snow and ice from piling up and compacting the fibers, then brush in spring.
