How to choose artificial turf
Face weight, pile height, blade shape and infill, explained in plain terms.
Updated · By The Turf Factory
The short answer
Start with how the space is used, then compare pile height, face weight and blade shape. Pets and heavy rain call for permeable backing; putting greens need a short, texturized surface.
Pile height
Pile height is how tall the blades are. Ours run from 0.62” (Pro Putt 42) to 1.875” (Luxe Flow 75). Taller pile looks fuller; shorter pile is easier to maintain and better for pets and play.
Face weight
Face weight is the ounces of yarn per square yard above the backing. Higher face weight generally means a denser lawn. Our landscape turfs range from 38 oz (Bermuda) to 75 oz (Luxe Flow 75).
Blade shape
Blade shape sets the look, feel and durability:
- S-blade: soft and resilient, used in Luxe Flow 75 and Premier Pet Flow 55.
- W-blade: natural look with a cooling profile, used in Malibu and Tropical Flow.
- C-blade: durable and realistic, used in Bermuda.
- Texturized: short and dense for a true roll on putting greens.
Infill
Most landscape turf uses 1–3 lbs of infill per square foot to support the blades. Malibu Flow 65 and Legacy Speed are non-infill products.
