Water rules are lighter here

In Schertz, drought stages usually aren’t the reason to choose turf. The city has drawn its water from the Carrizo Aquifer since March 2003. Its conservation page says the Carrizo isn’t under Stage 1 through 4 restrictions, unlike the Edwards Aquifer that supplies its neighbors. The one year-round rule is that sprinklers can’t run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hand-held hoses and drip are allowed any time.

So we won’t tell you turf gets you around a watering ban in Schertz. What it does is take care of the parts of the yard that are hard to keep up even with plenty of water.

The shady strip by the patio

A common problem area is the grass next to a covered patio or pergola. Texas A&M AgriLife says St. Augustinegrass tolerates shade, but it still needs several hours of light a day. Under a roof edge it thins out, the soil shows through, and the bare spots turn to mud after rain.

Turf fixes that strip without fighting the shade. Luxe Flow 75 is our fullest lawn turf, with a tall S-blade in three greens and a two-tone thatch, so it matches the look of a full lawn in the sunny part of the yard. In open sun, Tropical Flow 62 is the cooler choice.

Heat, freezes and upkeep

The Schertz area has hot summers and a few freezes each winter. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for San Antonio’s airport show about 122 days a year at 90°F or above, and about 14 nights at or below freezing. Warm-season grass goes brown and dormant after a hard freeze, and it needs mowing all through the long summer. Turf looks the same in January as in July. Upkeep is a few minutes with a leaf blower and an occasional rinse.

Three counties, one city

Schertz sits on the Bexar-Guadalupe county line along FM 78 and has since grown into Comal County. It’s named for Sebastian Schertz, who ran a store there in 1875 when the railroad arrived, and it incorporated in 1958 with 351 residents. By 2021 the population was 42,622. Whichever county your address is in, the quote process is the same: we measure, show samples on site, and give you a written price.

Schertz turf FAQ

Questions from Schertz homeowners

Is Schertz under drought stages like San Antonio?

No. The City of Schertz has drawn its water from the Carrizo Aquifer since March 2003, and its conservation page says the Carrizo is not under Stage 1, 2, 3 or 4 restrictions. That could change if conditions get worse, so check the city’s page.

Are there any watering limits in Schertz?

Yes, year-round. Outdoor sprinkler watering is prohibited from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Hand-held hoses and drip irrigation can be used any time, and runoff into ditches isn’t allowed.

If water isn’t restricted, why install turf in Schertz?

There are other reasons: shade under patios where grass won’t fill in, play areas that stay free of mud, putting greens, and less mowing and watering in summer. Turf also stays green through freezes without going dormant.
