A small city inside a big one
Castle Hills is its own town, but SAWS sets its watering rules. The city covers about 2.5 square miles and is completely surrounded by San Antonio. It developed in the late 1940s along what is now Loop 410, which splits it into north and south halves, about nine miles north of downtown San Antonio. It has its own police, fire and public works departments. Its population peaked at 5,311 in 1970 and was 3,978 in 2020.
Water is the exception to that independence. SAWS operates the Castle Hills water system, pumping Edwards Aquifer groundwater, so Castle Hills homes follow the same drought stages as San Antonio. SAWS showed Stage 3 in early October 2026, which means sprinklers once a week on your address day.
Pavers, walks and driveways
Grass between pavers is one of the hardest spots to keep up on a once-a-week schedule. The strips are narrow, the concrete on both sides holds heat, and sprinkler heads rarely water them evenly. They brown out first and fill with weeds. Texas A&M AgriLife notes that chinch-bug damage is worst in hot, sunny spots along driveways and sidewalks, and it looks like drought stress that watering doesn’t fix.
Turf strips solve this. We excavate the joints, compact a base, and cut turf to fit so each strip sits flush with the pavers. The photo for this page shows that kind of layout in front of a house.
Front yards in an older city
Castle Hills dates to the years after World War II, so a project here often means replacing a front lawn that has been in place for decades. For a full front lawn, Luxe Flow 75 gives the most natural look from the street. For borders and paver joints, Bermuda’s four-tone C-blade with curled thatch is a good match. On a parkway or side yard that nobody walks on, Tropical Flow 50 keeps the cost down.
Before you call
Measure the area roughly, or count pavers if you’re doing joints. Take a few photos, including where sprinkler heads sit, because heads inside the turf area have to be capped or moved. We’ll confirm everything at the site visit.
