Hill Country lots and rock
Boerne ground is rocky and uneven, so the base work is where your money goes. Kendall County is rolling to hilly Edwards Plateau country, between about 1,000 and 2,000 feet above sea level, with alkaline soils over limestone and dolomite. The town sits on Cibolo Creek about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio.
That shapes every Boerne quote. We check the site for shallow rock, slope and where runoff goes before we price anything. Then we excavate, break out high rock, and build a compacted stone base. On a slope, the base sets the final grade, so we take extra time on it.
Putting greens
A putting green suits a Hill Country lot well, because some natural roll in the ground can become the break in the green. There are two main choices:
- Pro Putt 42 is a texturized polypropylene surface for backyard greens and chipping areas. It suits most homeowners who putt and chip for fun.
- Premier Putt is texturized nylon at a tight 3/16-inch gauge for a true roll. It has a rubber backing that doesn’t drain, so we slope the base to carry water off the green.
A fringe of lawn turf around the green, often Luxe Flow 75, ties it into the rest of the yard. A green can go in the front yard too, like the one in our project photo.
Water rules and the rebate
Boerne Utilities customers were still in Stage 2 in early October 2026. Lawn sprinklers get one day a week during set hours, and violations can bring fines up to $1,000. Turf takes the putting area and any lawn around it off that schedule.
The city also has a Turfgrass Conversion Rebate: $1 per square foot, capped at $500 per account per fiscal year, for converting at least 100 square feet of healthy, irrigated grass to a qualifying drought-tolerant landscape. The program asks for a plan with plant selections and doesn’t mention synthetic turf, so we don’t assume it applies. Check with the city if the rebate matters to your budget.
About Boerne
German settlers founded the town as Tusculum in 1849 and renamed it in 1852 for the writer Ludwig Boerne. It became the Kendall County seat in 1862 and had 19,109 residents in 2020. The Cibolo Nature Center, about a mile from downtown, protects more than 160 acres along Cibolo Creek.
