How we build putting greens projects
A golf town, with a practice green out back
San Antonio has played golf for more than a century, and a backyard green lets you practice between rounds. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame calls Brackenridge Park, opened in 1916, the oldest 18-hole public course in Texas, and the first Texas Open was played there in 1922. Today the Alamo City Golf Trail runs the city’s eight municipal golf facilities, and the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open is played on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio the week before the Masters.
Most putts are short ones, and a green 20 steps from your back door is where you can practice them every day.
Pick the surface
Choose the surface by how you practice:
- Premier Putt is texturized nylon at a tight 3/16-inch gauge with a 0.65-inch pile, for a true roll on a putting-only green. The backing doesn’t drain, so we slope the base to shed rain.
- Pro Putt 42 is texturized polypropylene with infill, built for backyard greens and chipping areas.
Around the green, Bermuda turf at a 1.5-inch pile works as fringe and rough. It stops balls that run off and ties the green into the rest of the yard.
Breaks come from the base
The breaks in a turf green are shaped into the stone base before the turf goes down. The Texas Master Naturalists note that soils in far north Bexar County are shallow over limestone, while most of the county is clay that swells and shrinks. In Stone Oak, Helotes or Boerne we check for rock and grade first. In clay neighborhoods we build the base deep enough to stay flat. Either way, we keep the cup areas close to level and put the bigger slopes on the approach.
No watering, no mowing
A turf green doesn’t need irrigation, so SAWS watering days don’t affect it. It needs leaves cleared, a brush and an infill top-up in worn spots.

Questions
Before you get a quote
Nylon or polypropylene for my green?
Pick Premier Putt (nylon, optional infill) for a putting-only green. Pick Pro Putt 42 (polypropylene, infilled) if you also want to chip onto it. Both carry a 16-year warranty.
Can you build a green on a sloped Hill Country lot?
Yes. North of the city, soils are shallow over limestone, so we check for rock and grade before pricing. Some natural slope can become a break, and we keep the area around each cup close to level.
How fast will it roll?
Speed depends on the surface, infill and base. We roll the finished green with you before sign-off so you know how it plays.
Does a turf green need watering under SAWS rules?
No. A turf green needs no irrigation, so SAWS watering days don't apply to it. A natural bentgrass or Bermuda green would need regular water to stay playable.
How do I get a price?
Call (210) 954-1803. We measure the yard, talk through size, breaks and cup count, and give you a written price.
