How we build pet turf projects
Why dog yards fail in San Antonio
Most San Antonio dog yards fail for two reasons: clay and heat. The Alamo Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists says most of Bexar County is thick clay, mainly Houston Black, which swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Dogs wear paths along the fence, the grass dies, and the bare clay turns to mud after rain and cracks in dry spells.
Turf ends that cycle. With no grass to wear out, there are no yellow urine spots to reseed and no holes to fill.
Built to drain on clay
Clay drains slowly, so the stone base does the work. We dig out 3 to 4 inches of grass and topsoil, slope the grade away from the house and build a compacted crushed-rock base in layers. Urine and rinse water pass through the turf backing into that base instead of sitting on the clay.
Most dog areas get Premier Pet Flow 55, a 1.25-inch S-blade with flow-through drainage, made for dog runs, kennels and daycares. It springs back in the paths dogs run, and the shorter pile rinses clean. If the dog area is part of a bigger lawn, Tropical Flow 62 can cover the rest of the yard.
Rinsing during watering restrictions
You can rinse pet turf any day. SAWS limits sprinklers to one day a week under Stage 3, but hand-held hose watering is allowed any time on any day. A few minutes with a hose on the spots your dog uses, plus picking up solid waste, is the whole routine.
Plan for the heat
San Antonio averages about 122 days a year at 90°F or above, according to NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals, and turf in direct sun gets much hotter than grass. Animal Care Services says outdoor pets must have shade, fresh water and shelter. We help you put the dog area near a tree, patio or covered spot, and we recommend rinsing the turf before afternoon play.

Questions
Before you get a quote
Can I hose off pet turf during San Antonio watering restrictions?
Yes. SAWS allows hand-held hose watering any time on any day, even in Stage 3. Sprinkler limits apply to irrigation systems, not to rinsing a dog area by hand.
Does pet turf get too hot in a Texas summer?
It can. UF/IFAS researchers have measured artificial turf surfaces at 174°F on the hottest days. Put the dog area where it gets afternoon shade if you can, rinse it before play and keep hard exercise to mornings and evenings.
What does San Antonio require for dogs kept outside?
Animal Care Services says outdoor pets must have access to shade, fresh water and shelter, and the city bans tethering dogs outdoors. Plan the turf layout around a shaded spot and a water bowl.
Will it smell?
Urine has to drain through, not sit on top. We use flow-through turf over a compacted stone base, and a regular hose rinse of the spots your dog uses keeps residue from building up.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the size of the area, access and how much base work the site needs. Call (210) 954-1803 and we will measure and give you a written price.
