How we build putting greens projects

A serious golf town

St. Louis golfers have watched majors played down the road. Bellerive Country Club in Town and Country hosted the 1965 U.S. Open and the 1992 and 2018 PGA Championships. In St. Charles County, Lake Saint Louis has an 18-hole championship course at Lake Forest Country Club plus two par-3 nine-hole courses, and WingHaven in O’Fallon was built around a golf course.

A backyard green is how a lot of those golfers keep their putting in shape between rounds.

A green you can use twelve months a year

Turf putting greens don’t have an off season. At Lambert, the median last spring freeze is April 2 and the median first fall freeze is November 4, and NOAA normals count about 19 days a year when the high never gets above freezing. A natural green would sit dormant or covered through that stretch. A turf green needs a brush after the snow melts, and you’re back on it.

The breaks are built into the base

How a green rolls depends on the base under it. We excavate, compact a crushed-rock base and shape the slopes and breaks into it before the turf goes down. MU Extension says most Missouri soils absorb only about half an inch of water an hour, so we also pitch the base to shed water, which matters most on Premier Putt because its backing is non-permeable.

Pick the surface

  • Premier Putt: texturized nylon at a tight 3/16-inch gauge with a 0.65-inch pile, for a true roll on a putting-only green
  • Pro Putt 42: texturized polypropylene with a 0.62-inch pile and infill, for greens with a chipping area
  • Bermuda for the fringe and surrounding lawn, so the green is framed like a real collar

All are made in U.S.A., lead & PFAS free and carry a 16-year warranty.

Questions

Before you get a quote

Can I putt on it in winter?

Yes. Putting turf doesn’t go dormant. After snow, let it melt off or clear it gently, then brush the surface before you play.

Nylon or polypropylene?

Premier Putt is texturized nylon for a true, putting-only roll on a well-sloped base. Pro Putt 42 is texturized polypropylene set with infill, and it holds a chip shot, so it suits greens with a chipping area.

Can you add breaks and slopes?

Yes. We shape the breaks into the compacted base before the turf goes down, so the green reads the way you asked for. Tell us how many cups you want and where.

Will my HOA allow a putting green?

Most backyard greens aren’t visible from the street, but check your covenants first. In communities like Lake Saint Louis, ask the association before you schedule. We provide specs and samples.
