How we build pet turf projects
Why dogs and St. Louis grass don’t mix
Dog urine kills the grasses St. Louis lawns are made of. University of Missouri turf researchers explain that concentrated urine overloads the grass with nitrogen, leaving a brown patch with a green ring around it, and that as little as one fluid ounce burned even tall fescue. Kentucky bluegrass and bermudagrass were very sensitive, with burns lasting more than 30 days.
MU’s own advice is to water each spot within hours, re-sod the bad ones, or train the dog to use one designated area. A pet-turf run is that designated area, without the gravel or mulch.
Mud season
Spring is when a dog yard falls apart here. Lambert averages 41.7 inches of precipitation a year, and MU Extension says most Missouri soils absorb only about half an inch of water an hour. Add a dog running the fence line and the grass becomes a mud track.
We cut out the sod and build a compacted crushed-rock base under the turf. Rain and urine drain down through the backing and the rock, so paws come inside clean after a storm.
Summer and winter
Turf stays the same through both extremes. NOAA normals show about 47 days a year at 90°F or hotter, which is when fescue thins out, and zoysia stays tan from early fall through late spring, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Like any surface in full sun, turf gets warm in July, so leave the dog a shaded spot and keep a hose nearby.
What we install
Our go-to is Premier Pet Flow 55: a 1.25-inch S-blade at 55 oz face weight with flow-through drainage, infilled at 1 to 2 lbs per square foot. If the dog area should read as lawn from the patio, Tropical Flow 62 is the step up. Both are made in U.S.A., lead & PFAS free and carry a 16-year warranty.

Questions
Before you get a quote
Will a turf dog area smell?
Not if it drains and gets rinsed. Urine passes through the flow-through backing into the crushed-rock base, and a regular hose rinse flushes what’s left. Solid waste gets picked up like it would on grass.
My dog digs. Will it tear up turf?
There’s no grass or soil on top for a dog to dig out, and Premier Pet Flow 55 uses a short 1.25-inch blade that springs back in the paths dogs wear along the fence.
Can you do just the dog side of the yard?
Yes. Many owners keep a grass or turf lawn for people and fence off a pet-turf run by the back door. We plan the edges and drainage so the two areas meet cleanly.
Do you install for kennels and doggy daycares?
Yes. Premier Pet Flow 55 is built for dog runs, kennels, pet play yards and daycares. We walk the site, look at drainage and give a written price.
