How we build playgrounds & play areas projects
Why mulch and grass struggle under Brevard play sets
Loose fill takes constant work on the Space Coast. CPSC’s checklist calls for at least 12 inches of wood chips, mulch, sand or pea gravel under equipment, and that depth has to be kept up. Melbourne averages about 51 inches of rain a year, mostly in afternoon thunderstorms, which wash mulch out of swing pits and leave mud behind. Grass under a slide exit wears through, and what’s underneath is sand: UF/IFAS describes Central Florida soil as very sandy.
How we build a play area
The pad does the impact work; the turf is the wear surface. We excavate, grade for drainage, and compact a crushed-rock base. Under the equipment, a shock pad goes between the base and the turf, picked from the pad maker’s ASTM F1292 data for your tallest fall height. Malibu Flow 65 is our usual top layer because it needs no infill, so nothing gets kicked out or tracked indoors.
Open play lawns around the set can be standard turf. Tropical Flow 62 handles kids running between zones.
Size the zone before you buy the set
Measure first. CPSC calls for surfacing at least 6 feet in every direction from equipment, extended front and back of swings by twice the top-bar height, and it spaces structures over 30 inches tall at least 9 feet apart. On compact Brevard lots and screened pool yards, those numbers decide where the set can go.
Heat and storms
Plan for Melbourne’s sun. CPSC warns that playground surfacing in direct sun can cause burns and says to check whether it feels hot before children play. Shade sails or tree cover help. When thunder rolls in, the City of Melbourne says you are within striking distance and should head indoors.
Homes, HOAs and facilities
For backyards in an HOA, Florida § 720.3045 limits restrictions on turf not visible from the street, neighbors, common areas or a community golf course. For schools, churches and daycares we provide specs for your board.

Questions
Before you get a quote
Is turf alone safe under a swing set?
No. Under swings, slides and climbers the turf goes over a shock pad whose ASTM F1292 rating matches the equipment's fall height. Our turfs are not fall-rated on their own.
How big does the surfaced area need to be?
CPSC's checklist calls for protective surfacing at least 6 feet in every direction from the equipment, and in front of and behind swings for twice the height of the top bar. We measure that out at the site visit.
Won't turf get too hot in a Melbourne summer?
It can. CPSC warns that surfacing in direct sun can cause burns and advises checking surfaces before play. With highs near 90°F in July and August, plan shade over the play set and check the surface on summer afternoons.
Do you work with schools, churches and daycares?
Yes. We measure, price the turf and pad together, and give you specs for your board or facility manager. Your team still sets supervision and inspection routines.
