How we build pet turf projects
Why dog yards fail on the Space Coast
Dogs wear grass down fastest where Brevard soil is weakest. UF/IFAS describes Central Florida soil as very sandy, and it holds little water or nutrients. Paths along the fence go bare, urine leaves yellow spots, and the sand ends up on the floor inside.
Summer makes it worse. Melbourne averages about 51 inches of rain a year, most of it from afternoon thunderstorms, and the City of Melbourne reminds residents those storms return every summer. A bare dog run turns to mud by evening.
How we build a Melbourne dog area
Pet turf works here when the base drains. We dig out the worn grass and sand, grade the area so water runs away from the house and pool cage, and compact a crushed-rock base in layers. Premier Pet Flow 55 goes on top: a 1.25-inch S-blade that springs back in the paths dogs run, with flow-through backing so urine and rinse water pass down instead of sitting on the surface.
There is nothing left to dig up and no grass to reseed after summer. Paws come in clean after a storm.
Heat, shade and placement
Melbourne summers are hot, with average highs near 90°F in July and August, so plan the dog area around shade. A covered patio edge, a tree line or a shade sail over the main spot helps. Rinse the turf on the hottest afternoons and keep water out for the dog. We’ll point out the sunniest stretches during the visit.
Rules that work in your favor
Turf skips the lawn calendar. A turf dog yard needs no irrigation on the water district’s schedule and no fertilizer under Brevard’s June 1 to September 30 ban. In an HOA, Florida § 720.3045 keeps the association from restricting turf in a backyard run that isn’t visible from the street, neighbors, common areas or a community golf course.
Built from the factory, warrantied
Premier Pet Flow 55 is Made in U.S.A., lead and PFAS free, and carries a 16-year warranty. For side yards where budget matters more, Tropical Flow 50 is the lighter option.

Questions
Before you get a quote
Will pet turf smell in Florida heat?
Odor comes from urine that has nowhere to go. We build on a compacted crushed-rock base under flow-through Premier Pet Flow 55 so it drains down, and a regular hose rinse carries it through. Solid waste gets picked up like on grass.
Does turf get too hot for my dog?
Turf in full sun gets warm in a Melbourne summer, where average highs run near 90°F in July and August. Plan shade over the dog's main area, give them water, and rinse the surface on the hottest afternoons. We'll talk through placement during the site visit.
Can I rinse turf on a day I'm not allowed to water?
The St. Johns River Water Management District schedule covers landscape irrigation. A turf yard has no lawn irrigation schedule at all, and we cap the old sprinkler heads during the install. Check with your utility if you have questions about hose use.
What does a dog run cost?
Price depends on square footage, base work and access to the yard. We measure on site and give you a written price at no charge.
